國泰銀行於一九六二年開始營業，其使命是於大洛杉磯地區為逐漸成長卻被忽略的華裔社區提供金融服務，成為南加州第一家華裔銀行。由於體會到所服務的社區只是大環境中的一部份，銀行所採納的座右銘是：『為所有顧客敞開大門』。因為受到不斷湧入的移民潮、美國與亞洲的貿易以及社區經濟的發展等因素推動，國泰銀行從一家資本僅為五十五萬元的銀行發展成了一個上市的金融機構，股東淨值為九億七千一百萬元而總資產更高達一百零四億元。其營業地區自西岸向東擴及到紐約州及麻薩諸塞州東部、北邊到華盛頓州西雅圖、南部則達德州；海外方面，銀行在亞太區三個最重要的商業中心： 台北、上海及香港也設有據點。
