Budgeting

Budgeting helps you keep track of how much money you have coming in, how much you spend and where that money’s going.  Here are a few of steps you can take to get you started on creating a budget for yourself:

      1. Figure out how much money you have coming in from scholarships, loans, parents, job, etc.  In other words, what’s your income?

      2. Think about what you spend, and pick some categories for your spending.  Some examples would be rent, utilities, tuition, food, debt, travel, entertainment, etc.

      3. Figure out what you HAVE to spend in those categories to survive, and yes, entertainment counts.  If the numbers aren’t clear the first month of budgeting, try to take a look at what you’ve spent the previous months to give yourself an estimate.

Not too bad, right?  Once you’ve done that, just keep track of what you bought, categorize it, and match it with your budget.  You might be surprised by what you find, but you’ll be able to keep track of where your money’s going, where you can cut back, and how much you can afford to spend on the good stuff.
