Cathay Bank is proud to support the Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking (CAST) in their work to put an end to modern slavery and human trafficking, assisting thousands of survivors throughout their journey to freedom, providing counseling, legal resources, housing, education, leadership training, and mentorship.
Led by Marisa Marquisepe, our EVP, Director of Financial Crimes, Cathay Bank is the first financial institution to collaborate with CAST to help survivors rebuild lives and restore independence and dignity through monetary support and financial literacy.
In July, Marisa Marquisepe was invited to attend on behalf of Cathay Bank as a community leader and one of its supporters to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors meeting, where they declared July 30th as the “World Day Against Trafficking in Persons” in recognition of CAST’s leadership and significant impact on the LA community.
CAST was created in response to a shocking labor trafficking case that took place in El Monte in 1998, where 72 Thai nationals were held in modern-day slavery—an issue that, unfortunately, remains prevalent across the United States. CAST played a pivotal role in the passage of the landmark Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000. In 2014, it became the first nonprofit to receive the Presidential Award for Extraordinary Efforts to Combat Trafficking in Persons.
